Woody Sang Danke Schoen
April 20:
Ten years ago I was backstage with Wayne Newton after a benefit show in Dallas. NASCAR mogul Bruton Smith asked Wayne
“I was wondering if you were
going to sing Danke Schoen”
- Wayne’s signature song .
“I always sing Danke Schoen. That’s what my fans want to hear me sing.”
That’s why Carolina fans love
Woody Durham.
Wayne & Woody have both delighted their fans for 40+ years giving them
"what they want to hear".

"Just" An Extraordinary Ordinary Man
April 16:
I had no idea what Mac did for a living. I never knew what 95% of my friends’ dads
did for a living
. They were dads doing grown-up “business stuff". Mac ran the FCX – Farmers Cooperative Exchange.
“Men
like Mac”
were the backbone of America during the second half of the 20th century.
Men like Mac have been leaving us for the past 20 years or so. Mac left us several weeks ago. Mac was Ed’s dad.

Paid To Call The Corners
April 14:
Firemen are not heroes for playing cards in the firehouse. Firemen are heroes for running into burning buildings. Umpires are not paid to call belt-high fastballs down the
middle of the plate. They get paid to call the corners.
College Chancellors get paid to “call the corners” and to be the cool head when all about them are losing theirs. Some times Chancellors lose their heads too. This week was one of those times.
This was a very difficult column to write. I prefer belt-high fastballs. Someone has to call the corners. If not me, then who?

GOOD News re: UNC Football - Finally!
April 11:
A year ago an epic tweet forever scarred UNC Footb
all. In ensuing months the best off-field news has been
"No Tressel
-
e
sque incriminating email has surfaced YET.
" Guess what? I hav
e
some very GOOD NEWS to report. No. BOTBob has not developed a conscience or a spine.
UNC Football is teetering on the brink of SEC-ization.
Can a hero from it's past rescue his alma mater?
Also observations of this year's
"Tradition like no other ..."
And an update on Jim Harrick Watch from Amedeo's parking lot.

Like Two Teenagers In Heat
April 8:
Compared to
Debbie Grabs Mark
, the
Butch hiring fiasco
had the thoroughness of a Supreme Court nomination. McDonald’s vets a new fries frier more thoroughly than either of these multi-million $$ hires.
If Debbie & Mark were teenagers in heat
needing to get married
in Dillon SC; it would take longer than this courtship/ wedding.
Gary Williams leapfrogs into 2nd place on Wuffs’ Most Hated list. Who is #1? It’s a trick question.
Sometimes managing to
matter
just means showing up.... at a sort-of-country church on the outskirts of Durham.
