"Hi Coach Dooley, this is John ....."

BREAKING NEWS:  BobLee will provide an analysis of most recent events around noon on Friday. True Blues should hunker down and avoid the company of rival fans for "a while".  Don't try to alibi or excusify.  This is all quite "not good".  The degree of "not good" is yet to be determined.  .... BL

August 26:
As another Autumn of color & pageantry queues up, we reflect on a “might have been” that has fascinated me for a decade.  As with all might have beens its pointless, but fun, to speculate.  At least I think its fun to speculate - and THAT is what matters here.

Ride the WayBack Machine to December 2000 - to the Skipper Bowles Hire’em & Fire’em Room in Dean’s Dome.  UNC Director of Athletics & Designated Blamee Richard “Dickie” Baddour introduces John Bunting as Carolina’s new Head Football Coach.

A handful of Carolina Junction Boys recalled John from his playing days of the early 70s.  Most UNC fans were still pissed over Affair de'Beamer.  Those managing to get over that were hoping Dickie would hire the “Butch Davis of 2000”.  There WAS  “a Butch”  in 2000. There is always  “a Butch”.  There will ALWAYS BE  “a Butch”.  Loonytic Fringers LIVE for quick fix coaches and blue-chippers labeled “The Answer” aka Mike Paulus .... burp.

The burly ex-linebacker was introduced to a dazed media.  His career as a player/coach was printed out and Dick Vermeil's phone rang for background.

By his opening remarks it was obvious that John was in a very different situation from any he had experienced.  Cracking NFL heads in front of 60,000 in Veterans Stadium is one thing.  Coherently conveying both enthusiasm and a sense of confident competence as the Head Football Coach of a major university is another all together.

Immediately following his introductory, John made a telephone call.  That call a decade ago woulda coulda shaped the John Bunting Era of Carolina Football leading us to where we are today.

The call went to James Webster at East Carolina.  James & John were linebacker teammates on the front end of Bill Dooley’s successful Era of Tar Heel Football thru the 70s.  James & John had seen each other once since graduation and their familiarity was based on shared experiences 30 years prior.  John offered James the position of Asst Head Coach.  James said “YES” as he sped to Chapel Hill to sign a contract before he woke up from this dream.

From the hiring of Webster, John Bunting proceeded to cobble together his first staff.

that cobbling, uncobbling, recobbling never ended.

That cobbling, uncobbling and recobbling never ended for six years.  While it would be argued that Bunting’s lack of recruiting expertise was his Achilles Heel, I differ in opinion.

Where John’s Football CEO inexperience showed in the most disastrous fashion was the hiring and management of his staff.  Managing one’s peers is a challenge in any business.  For a 50 y/o rookie Head Coach it was a terminal cancer.  From John Tenuta in Year One to Frank Cignetti in Year Six, the door of the Kenan FB Center was forever revolving in turmoil with personalities all across the spectrum all dancing to different drummers.

A number of prominent Tar Heel footballers really wanted John Bunting to succeed.  It was a terrific Prodigal Son storyline that mighta made it - but for that first phone call.  What might have been .... if that call had been to Wilmington

RRRRING ..... “Hello. This is Bill” .....

Coach, this is John Bunting.” .....

“Well hello John and congratulations.” ......

“Thank you. .....  Coach, I need you.” ......

“Huh?  Need this old trenchfigfhter?  For what?” ......

“Coach, I’ve got the opportunity of a lifetime.  I don’t want to blow it.” .....

“Huh?” .....

“Coach, I don’t know squat about assembling a staff.  How to recruit assistants – what traits and skills to look for – how to weed out the bull-shi**ers – what sort of personalities to bring together – and a 100 other tricks of building a staff.  Coach, I need you in Chapel Hill for the next month at my side as I build my coaching team.  I’ve cleared it with Baddour.  I can pay you $20,000 and all expenses.  I need you as my Jiminy Cricket if I have a chance for success as Head Football Coach at Carolina.” ......

“John, you don’t need an old warhorse like me.” ......

“Coach, you are THE one ol’ warhorse I absolutely need with me this next month.  There are 1,000,000 things I have to learn but without a solid staff I can trust, I will be forever rearranging deck chairs on The Titanic.  I can’t afford learning curve mistakes.  Give me a fighting chance to succeed here, Coach .... Don’t let me screw up picking my staff.” ......

“John, I’ll be there day after tomorrow.  I’ll stay as long as you need me and leave when you don’t need me.  Let’s figure three weeks then re-evaluate .....

“Thank you Coach” ......

That conversation never took place.  Would it have mattered in the long run?  Impossible to say.  So many of the issues that would define John Bunting’s tenure were staff-related from recruiting decisions to play-calling to the everyday sense of order in the UNC Football Office.

No one ever doubted John Bunting’s high intensity “Want To!” but the practical “How To” could never catch up.  Ultimately the dream became a bitter nightmare for all concerned.

Is UNC Football better off the way it has turned out?  Who’s to say?  Would a decade of 8-9 Ws seasons under Bunting The Prodigal be better than the same under Butch The Merc?   Who’s to say?  The former did not happen.   The latter has not happened yet.

Success has happened amid Kenan's fabled pines under Bill Dooley in the 70s – Dick Crum in the early 80s – Mack Brown in the 90s.  On that we could all agree if  ‘twere possible that we could all agree on anything.  :>)

This is a quirky commentary designed to stimulate conversational debate among adult fans with a minimum of one toe in the reality pool.  A minimum of one toe in the reality pool is, alas, not required to visit here. (sigh!)

Hair-shirted loonies will perceive this as another piece of BobLee’s Machiavellian conspiracy puzzle to permanently destroy UNC Football.  That is how hair-shirted loonies view Life.  If you see it that way, you are a hair-shirted loonie.  :>) - INCOMING!

We heard from LOTS o’ folks lately including my old Ehringhaus roomie – Curt Wynn – Hero of UNC’s 1967 win at Wally Wade.  Curt’s was one e-note that did not make a disparaging reference about my mamma.

Good food for thought...poignant...a classic 'for want of a nail, a shoe was lost' tale, describing the relentless pressure of a performance driven marketplace, and what it does to all who don't meet expectations, be they of noble and good character, such as John Bunting, morally lacking, or somewhere in-between. ..... John Greenleaf Whittier said it best, "Of all sad words of heart and pen, the saddest are these: it might have been."

Great column. I was a big fan of Bunting getting the job done. I wish it had worked. I love it when an alum can get it done, like we have in some of the other sports at Carolina. I haven't drunk all of Butch's Kool-aid. I am a wait-and-see kind of guy here. Not sure if he is a "stripper" or maybe just the "wild girl next door", raised right, but has a wild, risky streak. Like I said before, I am naive.......I just heard on local radio about all of the SC players living in an expensive (for Columbia) hotel for $450/month. Spurrier said he knew they were living there...just didn't know what their lease agreement said. He stayed in the same hotel for several months after taking the job at USC. Same guy was throwing mud on Blake. Nasty business those coaches are in.

As one who was recruited to play football for Jim Hickey, but went to Davidson instead, I have always had the Tar Heels as my favorite team. And, nothing would have pleased me more than to see John Bunting succeed as the head football coach, but it wasn't to be the case. If your scenario had taken place, would things have been different? Probably, but they didn't and we'll just have to see how things play out with the current crop of coaches......Do the folks down in Alabama believe that Nick Saban is the next thing to the Bear? You better believe it. He even has the same agent as the Pale Rider. (Jimma Sexton)...... keep up the good work!

Insert Chuck Amato instead of Bunting and similar issues. But.....Chuck had a guy named Phillip Rivers which covered up a lot of shortcomings..until Phillip left. Theoretically, Chuck should have had the experience since he was Associate Head Coach under Bobby Bowden. But then Bobby had the same guys for years including Chuck Amato. Bobby's problems started when all those guys (Richt, Rodriguez, Amato) started leaving.

Correct HeadWuf. John never got his "keystone recruit" like Amato had w/ PR. Both men had CEO liabilities and constant staff issues. ..... There is A LOT more to being a coaching success than Xs and Os.

If my wishin' and hopin' could have made John succeed, he would be in UNC's Hall of Fame right now. I really enjoy you BobLee, and I definitely want you at the Oct. 1st Fish Fry & all subsequent Fries...but you seem to be taking inordinate delight in Carolina's discomfiture. I dare you to write a column on some Tar Heel player/players whom you know very well aren't 'hired guns' or 'strippers.' Even a muckraker is allowed to take a shower once in a while! Even if we lose our best defensive tackle and wide receiver for the year (ie forever) I'm really glad the Chinese water torture is ending tonight. For the record: I believe Butch Davis in one, a very fine football CEO; two, in Chapel Hill mostly for the money; three, a decent person who is not trying to build a program on cheating. I'm glad he is here. Mac in Derm

Mac, we disagree on this. I recommend you (1) read lots more Adam Lucas and much less BobLee.... or (2) start your own website. I can recommend a great webmaster to get you up and going..... "Mac in Lexington" thinks John Calipari is a very fine fellow too.

BobLee, do you disagree on point one, point two or point three? Or just in general? BTW muckraking is an honorable deal when done honestly--as you do it--and it's your website, so naturally you can take my editorial suggestions with a large grain of salt. You need not fear internet competition from me--in two posts I've already exceeded the reasonable limits of my internet writing time today! I DO NOT think John Calapari is a very fine fellow too.

OOPS, BL, just figured out what you were saying. You disagree with the fact that Butch is at UNC. I get it now--sorry I'm so slow. Honest question--if you were AD and had a magic wand, who would you choose? Jim Grobe perhaps?

Mac: I disagree that I have a responsibility to only report Pollyanna stuff. College sports is a very dirty sack of steaming hypocrisy for those striving to be "big time"..... When UNC hired Butch they said "WHATEVER it takes - Get us to a BCS Game". Butch is doing what he signed on to do. WHATEVER it takes. ..... Again, Adam Lucas can do the Tar Heels Visit The Homeless Shelter stories ................. ................ ....... My choice of local coaches would be Dave Cutcliffe #1 - Give him UNC's legitimate resources and he would do very very well. I love Grobe too.

BL, straight up--do you believe the Pale Rider is intentionally cheating to get good players? Or that he's winking-and-nodding at his cheating assistant coaches, knowing full well that he is stacking up steaming hypocrisy by the pallet load? Or is it simply the stadium bling-bling, and the fact that he doesn't know or really care who #23 was? That last is really dumb and irritating in my view, but not ethically offensive.

Mac: its like Bill Clinton not considering oral sex as sex. What is being unearthed at UNC is standard operating procedure at BCS contending schools. Butch doesn't consider it "cheating". He has to have "football talent" to win big. Its 2010 and that is inconsistent with any normal academic institution especially one that considers itself "elite". ...... Kids with ZERO academic inclination can only stay eligible via subterfuge.

I went to the Official Carolina website to try to get an update on the press conference. At this point, I am 4:20 into the video looking at an empty table and people milling around. I could understand this if it were a live event, but you would think a University with a highly respected school of journalism could give us a better edited video. I mean, is that too much to expect?

Foolish, foolish, foolish. I thought the water torture was ending when it was just beginning. Sadder but wiser.
