JoePa, Dean Smith and Jimmy V

Jan 23:  Joe Paterno is dead.  Following twelve bizarre hours of “is he, isn’t he”, he now apparently officially IS.  Considering the mondo-bizarro twists in JoePa’s legacy over the past six months should we have expected any different ending?

Catching an ESPN obituarial special Sunday morning, I was struck with odd tangential connections ‘tween JoePa, Dean Smith and Jimmy V.  ........Whoa!

Before you launch a cyber RPG at moi for a sacreligious besmirchment of your messianic coach of choice.... read me out.  Then, assault my Internet castle if you must.

Up until late October whatever opinion you had of Joe Paterno was 99% likely to have been either quite positive or at least not negative.   Some folks actually don’t invest emotionally in sports figures.  “I think he/she has something to do with sports....” being the extent of an opinion.  I’m that way with members of rock bands and cellists not named YoYo Ma.

YoYo is an on-going  giggle in our family along with news story about midgets.  I digress......

In late October Joe Paterno’s 40-year superstar legacy moved from the sports page to the Front Page and suddenly Aunt Gertrude and “the shoeshine guy at the airport” all had an opinion on Joe.   Other than among the creepy perverts of NAMBLA, it was an unfavorable opinion.

By one’s mid-80s the opportunities for redemptive comebacks from “bludgeoning by media” are pretty well exhausted.   Whether guilty as charged or not, the last headlines one garners are the ones freshest over your grave.   Keep that in mind as you contemplate future endeavors or how well you have hidden past endeavors.

So JoePa passes on with a public obituary that none woulda predicted just four months ago.

In ESPN’s obituatorial “JoePa’s Life in Review”; they noted he had for decades proclaimed his Penn State football program as “above” the sort of programs run by Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson and Jackie Sherrill to name three that Joe named.  The direct implication being “we run a squeaky clean operation populated by Eagle Scouts players and sainted coaches”.

In the past decade or so, those Eagle Scout players began to resemble Crips & Bloods but JoePa was somehow still sainted.   Then KABOOM!

Did JoePa only make one grievous error in judgement or is that the only one we know of?  How many bodies are buried in John Wayne Gacey’s backyard?  I can give Joe the benefit of doubt there was just this one..... but it was a Lulu!

Yeah yeah BobLee.  Get to the part about Dean and Jimmy V.... Hold your horses.

The Legend In The Basement aka Dean Smith has, unlike Joe, passed the point of adding to or subtracting from his substantial legacy.  His story is writ subject to anything percolating up that might require a quickly added epilogue.  I’m not implying there is any such.

Dean is out of the public limelight now.  If anything were to bubble up, it would be in a different context than JoePa’s farewell mega-crisis.  Here’s hoping nothing does.

The odds of Dame Fortuna dolloping a mustard splatt on the last chapter of Dean’s curriculum vitae are remote.  If Dean’s fellow congregates at the Olin T Binkley Tabernacle & Sushi Bar are correct - the ultimate deity in the galaxy is a bisexual unicorn named LeRoy.

Other than that last yucky chapter, Joe and Dean have remarkably similar bios......  Both were one-school legacies, replacing their mentors at an early age....... Their resultant bodies of work were paragons of consistency albeit with only two national championships each......  Both earned Most Wins Ever status and multiple Sports Illustrated covers......   Both gave back to their employers and were synonymous with a sincere concern for the overall character development of the young men they mentored......  The family loyalty of those young men to their mentor is the stuff of legends.

We all knew Joe was old and not firing on all cylinders the past few years; but his cancer was unknown or totally hidden from public knowledge.  In the firestorm aftermath, we learned he was ill and then within weeks he is dead.

No one other than rival fan socio-paths are happy or espousing any ridiculous "serves him right" attitude to Paterno's passing.  Will Joe be seen as a martyr now?  Will his one life "oops" be expunged from his bio in respect?  I predict no to either point.   One’s life is what it is.... including any/all parallel lives or other skeletons in attics.  Can Charles Kuralt fans say "mistress in Utah"?

To the legacy of Jimmy V..... such was not the case.  Had V NOT contracted cancer he would have quickly resumed his coaching career in the NBA and gone on to write many more pages in his public bio.   The tumultuous end to his NC State career being no more/less significant in retrospect than John Calipari's multiple malfeasances are to his.

Jimmy never had the opportunity to resume that coaching career making the final chapters ones of turmoil and controversy.  Mediated considerably by the mega-heroic manner in which he played out his very final chapter.

JoePa, like Jimmy V, passed away from cancer while his professional controversy was still fresh in the public mind.  Unlike Jimmy, Joe's circumstances never gave him a final encore for redemption.

I find these tangential connections fascinating.  Not everyone will, of course.

There are Two Absolute Certainties in Life:

(1) Some Wuff-goober will send in a comment containing the phrase “just one pair of tennis shoes”..... And

(2) There is a Sale in progress at Jos A Bank.

Now.... on a lighter note

Starting today (Monday) BobLee will have a weekly column at chapelboro.com - a news&views website serving the various communes of Orange County.   These will be vintage BobLee.   At least that's the plan.

Q:   Has the phrase “....might offend someone” been uttered by chapelboro suits?
   A:   Three times.  Why?

Q:   Can unfiltered BobLee co-exist with anal-retentive Chapel Hill?
A:   Rush lasted three weeks on ESPN.  I’m shooting for a minimum of four.  The over/under on hysterical threats to cancel (free) subscriptions is nine for the first column.

Check it out really quickly MONDAY MORNING just in case - www.chapelboro.com under "DRIVE".   My normal column day on chapelboro will be Thursday.   If this blows up it’s Art Chansky’s fault.

I attended the 78 State-Penn State game in State College where we tailgated on a very cold day with the family of a dorm mate who were ardent Penn State fans. I was amazed and impressed by the whole experience with the coup de grace being when JoePa walked thru the tailgate area after the game on his way home from the stadium. There were no request for autographs or stops for big booster handshakes, only "Good game coach" and a humble "Thank you". He was walking home from work and the parking lot was the shortest distance to his house and dinner. It was working class PA personified. ... Your perspective of JoePa, the Dean and Jimmy V reminded me how time can be a game changer on the national stage. It took the national press a la the ESPN era for the country to realize what we regionally in the ACC knew about the Dean since the 60's. He won, he recruited with a vengeance, he was an excellent practice & sideline coach and did this all with high character with very few blemishes. Time and the ESPN era has similarly been kind to JimmyV. His "lynching", good-bad-indifferent, has long been overwhelmed in a public perspective nationally by the drumbeat of his ESPY speech and the tremendous work done by the JimmyV Foundation. It will be interesting to watch how time treats JoePa and the closing season of his tenure. I hope JoePa's national reputation will once again match his local respect, but I'm afraid it will take Sandusky becoming forthright to start the process and that my friend seems improbable. .. ............................................... ............................................... ................... As a long time reader and unoffical AP/UPI rankings voter, it had been a while since I felt obliged to upset the historic rankings of columns and or sayings. .... Let the rankings reflect that "If Dean’s fellow congregates at the Olin T Binkley Tabernacle & Sushi Bar are correct - the ultimate deity in the galaxy is a bisexual unicorn named LeRoy" is hereby enshrined as a Top 3 coffee spitter. ............................ .............................................. .............................................. .... BobLee, just to get it out of the way, it was more than "just one pair of tennis shoes" because there were some comp ticket sales as well. Great write-up on JoePa and Dean. One is a legend now once removed where loyalty itself was probably his one glaring mistake. The other is legend enough who deserves the status even if some might not agree with his politics and others might not agree with his choice of school and coaching demeanor (jealousy).... However, I would love to hear your broader take on Jimmy V. His story was much more complex than the other two, and it has a much wider breadth of "fan emotion". Knew him pretty well through the Alumni Association both personally and professionally and was in full tears at his farewell speech at Reynolds Coliseum. Now I suffer the uber-Wolf-monkey board anonymous rants from some who claim I was complicitous in his resignation. Absolutely not true, and the whole process first got me deep in the poltical machinations of the BOG. Simple statement - Jimmy V. was an excellent coach and person whose ultimate lifetime "legend" status never had a chance to play out. His family was excellent as well, and from brothers to wife to daughters have done great things with the V-Foundation. ........................ ............................................... ............................................... ...... BL: Further discussions of "the Jimmy V thing" invariably deteriorates into "was Claude Sitton a FreeMason... how did Jack Ruby sneak a gun into the basement of the Dallas Police HQ... and how could DB Cooper just disappear ???? ........... ............................................... ......................

As I read this one thing stuck out. No man is a saint and few should be judged on the foibles of being human (prone to mistakes in judgement, some more critical than others). The Gaceys of this world don't get a pass, they define evil. JoPa's problem was he was associated with someone who comes awfully close to a Gacey. We can live next door to evil or it can reside in one of our closest friends and it can hide itself so well that we don't recognize it. At best JoPa's foible with his friend was he couldn't recognize evil, and I would dare say that happens to every one of us every day, even in self examination. At the end of his day his pluses far outweighed his minuses and in this case he should not be held accountable for the actions of others, only that he failed to recognize evil and do something about it. .... ............................................. ............................................. ...................... BL: In the end, does it really matter what "some guy in Fresno" thinks about one's public image? The people who "knew" JoePa have their memories. ....... ............................................. .............

Nice start on chapelboro, BobLee. ... For those not acquainted with you already, this gives a good preview, IMHO. ... See, too, that you caught Jeff Foxworthy (?-spelling—and while on the subject of spelling, is “Historic Hillsborough” still “borough” or has the name been changed back to “boro.” I recall the snickers all around when, during our years in “the Southern Part of Heaven,” the town changed the spelling in order to sound more historic.) on the PBS special, “You Don’t Know Dixie.” Referring, of course, to his delightful explanation of the real meaning and usage of the phrase “bless his/her heart.” .... Perfect, too, for the context in which you used it in this article. .... Cheers & best wishes for a run of more than 4 weeks. ............................... .................................................. .................................................. ..... Good reading as usual. The common thread I see with these three is that they were all "motivators". Especially to their respective fan bases. Another thread is that they gave back to their community (or partisan community). We will always overlook transgressions and malfeasence for those who makes us feel good and win. JoePa lived long enough for the internet to peel the onion, Jimmy V was on the front edge and Dean got away before that scalpel came a callin'. Worship ideals, not people. ...... ................................................... ........................................BL: Dean bailed out when sports talk radio was gearing up. The Internet would have finished Dean off for sure. Jimmy V would have loved it. JoePa likely did not own a computer.

Nice column. I watched the crawlers last night while watching the UV-VT game (UGLY). The ESPN commentator that said that perhaps Jo-Pa died of a broken heart hit home. As a V Supporter, I still think that the pressure of the whole thing triggered something. It also was a little bizarre this morning when PSU (we FIRED him) issued such a gooey statement. PC and Legal and PR folks ruled that night. Methinks the BOG or whatever their moniker is should have immediately accepted his resignation and let it go. NO, they had to do something to protect themselves in the inevitable lawsuits. As to Jimmy V., I was wandered through the Student Supply Store a few weeks ago and saw this book, "V & Me", which is a compilation by Bob Cairns of "V" stories. I am not much of a reader, but this book hooked me. I cried at the end when I read Mikey K. and Pam's final comments. I really think that V has found his place in history and nothing that he could have ever accomplished will surpass his V foundation and that legacy. RIP, JTV, we loved you and miss you. The "V & Me" book is a MUST read for all Wuffies who remember him fondly. ..................... .............................................. .............................................. ............................BL: I hope Pam has found happiness with the Cary vet. .......... ............................................. ...............................

I think Paterno was treated with total disrespect. He did what he thought was right at the time and wasn't the one that acted horribly. He was a leftover of great coaches that won the right way. The PC police that didn't do their job in the beginning overreacted (similar to the firing of the lacross coach at Duke). If the Penn State administration had reacted appropriately in the first place, perhaps there would have been a different outcome and numbers of abused children would have been a lot less. ......................... .......................................... .......................................... ..... BL: Admin bureaucrats and "Boards" very rarely react "properly". It is not their nature to do so. Theirs is a CYA mentality ..... Good to hear from you Babs. Agree with much you wrote. About Dean, two Mark Twain quotes come to mind. 'If you get the reputation as an early riser, you can sleep until noon the rest of your life' and 'an untested virtue is no better than a vice' quotes approximate. . . .The Daniels loved Dean and hated Valvano. If Smith had been subject to the same scrutiny and investigative reporting as Valvano, there might have been a pair of tennis shoes or two found. ............................ ................................................ ................................................ ....... I am not a conspiracy theorist either unless you define conspiracy theorist to include belief in what Frank IIRC Daniels admitted and was pretty obvious to casual observers, that the N&O went after Valvano with more vengeance than was appropriate. I define conspiracy theorist to be someone like the guy on the State board that insists the N&O went after V because of some real estate stuff. I do think some pristine reputations are a result of more than exemplary conduct. JoPa and Dean are very comparable in many ways. They probably when it came down to power on campus, outranked their respective chancellors...,I will certainly take a look at Jos A Bank...a sale you say. ........... ........................................... ........................................... ...... The sad part of JoePa is that the latest info says that he told the right person and that the person that told him gave virtually no details. Not sure he deserved what he got from PSU. As for V, and as you know I am a lifelong Wolfpacker, the one thing he did, which was tremendous, was '83. ESPN and Vitale deified him. It really does not matter what it takes to inspire as long as it does. He was a master at that. ............. ............................................. ..............................
