Carl Hiaasen's Twin !
...... Are you a fan of gonzo novelist Carl Hiaasen?  Carl’s writes bizarre stories of certified nutjobs doing goofy stuff in Florida.  He manages to stay just ahead of reality with his off-beat yarns.   I found Carl Hiaasen's evil twin – Tim Dorsey.
I discovered Tim Dorsey and his Serge A. Storm a few weeks ago.  Serge and his goofy pal, Lennie, are way more than a few fries short of a Happy Meal.   A Must Read (there are 8-10 Dorsey novels) if you can make any sense of a Hiaasen book.  As always, I recommend the audio version.

Both NFL Games Were Good’uns but
..... The real star of last Sunday was Kristin Chenoweth. She sang the National Anthem to a Candlestick Park mob of Bay Area sideshow freaks and Silicon Valley nerds,
I am a Kristin Chenoweth groupie.  She’s cute as a bug in a rug and just the happiest little person there’s ever been. Yes, Wicked is my all-time favorite Broadway play.

New Indianapolis Colts Coach is
...... Former UNC Asst - Chuck Pagano.  Pagano was Butch(er)'s Def Coord in 2007.

He’s Not Here is for sale
...... one of Franklin Street’s umpteen sticky-floored beer bars is changing hands.  The Canadian guy that bought He’s Not Here last year has tired of it.  He found a couple of goobers with more $$$ than good sense to take it.
Howsabout HNH as a great biz opportunity for Butch(er) – change the name from He’s Not Here to I Know Nuthin.
As a way to pick up drunk coeds, owning your own college-town bar runs distant second to an unmarked van and a rag soaked in chloroform.

Australian Open Tennis
..... Is Bjorn Borg still in the hunt?  Whatever happened to Evonne Goolagong?  Does anyone in America still play tennis?  Bring back wooden racquets.....

Chapelboro still in business
...... No update on how many “cancel my subscriptions” that chapelboro received; so they are gambling on one more from me over there.... check it out on “Voices of”.
I’m wedged in between Hilda The Organic Gardener and Saul The Raging Anarchist.

Hate Eli !!!
...... one of Blondie’s Facebook Friends ranted how much she HATES Eli Manning.  I’m sorry but that’s scary.   I sort of get the hate that atheists gin up for Tebow.  And who doesn’t feel a twinge of negativity towards Giessele’s Boy Toy Tom.... but Baby Brother Eli ?  Anyone who hates Eli should not be allowed to buy scissors or use Wendy’s Drive-Thru.

"Things Named For Dickie" Update
...... To the best of our knowledge, nothing new was named for Dickie this week.  If he had any more gaggy retirement fests we did not hear about them.
Speaking of naming things.... Lefty Driesell is angry that Maryland is naming its court "Gary Williams Court".   I can appreciate Lefty's ire.  I suggest a compromise.  Call it - "Dickie's Court".  Why not?

Why do "Boards" always screw stuff up?
..... Needless little things ALWAYS get screwed up by boards.  When the Penn State Trustees fired JoePa they did it with a terse phone call instead of a courtesy visit by whichever trustee was closest to him.  That was stoopid.  Do only idiots get appointed to these boards or do they morph into idiots by group osmosis?
The only bunch less effective than "a board" is "a blue ribbon panel".

It Used to be “Pose For Playboy”
...... when someone became an overnight celebrity, it used to be “an offer to pose nude for Playboy”.   Now it’s “received death threats on Twitter".  Just ask that Ravens’ placekicker or the 49er punt returner or Chancellors who fire sleazy FB coaches.

Not Enough Crazies ???
...... A headline you never expected to see – “Duke Doesn’t Have Enuff Crazies” – student demand for seats in Cameron’s “crazies section” is in a downward spiral over the past few years.  Why? speculation abounds.   Pretty simple – not much interest in ACC Hoops in Punjab high schools.  With Duke’s alma mater now the theme from Disney’s It’s A Small World After All, finding a Duke undergrad who knows a hushpuppy from a Christian Laettner is darn near impossible.....
On a more positive note:  Duke students' interest in cricket and snake charming is at an all-time high.

Say Good-night Gracie.....

This week's Rimshots is overshadowed by your excellent public column on Woody Durham "Voices of". That was right on the button! One thing hit me hard. What am I doing enjoying the rants of a basic "blue" person without having an equivalent "red" person to enjoy as well. We have several red bloggers who try but have neither the breadth of understanding, the humor, or the writing style.(Darn, that's hard to say, but maybe Carolina does teach better English and writing). Go Pack tonight ! in any case !... ............................................ ........................................... .... BL: BK, you have sown the seed for a future column with your kind words. I spent a mere four years at UNC. I spent the following 40 years on Life's Campus. I am much more the end product of THAT education than anything I might have stepped in in Chapel Hill in the late 60s. .. .......................................... .........................................

"The logo is a monkey on a unicycle".. as always there is at least one coffee spitter on a Thursday, and that one came in from the weeds. Funny stuff Bobbie. As for someone from the "red" side of the street to write a column like yours I'm sure it would come out sounding like a tech manual (ducking). ........................... .................................................... ................. Is there any way to get an "ignore" function on here so we can more easily avoid You-Know-who's self-absorbed incoherence? ... ............................................ ........................................... ........ Not being a frequenter of CH bars (although I did do that whilst matriculating at NCSU and occassionally venturing over there), my only knowledge of "He's Not Here" came from the chronicles of the Dookie Coed who picked up her "subjects" for further anaysis, measurement, and ratings. Her folks spent upwards of $300K for her "SR. Thesis". I also concur that Lefty should be a bit miffed, he was the one that started MD's BB history. Obviously the MD AD must be "biased" against Lefty. Sort of the same way that Valvan will be "Shackled Forever" for not doing a background check on talented recruits. Went to PT today and the receptionis commented that there were more patients in RED today that she had ever seen. Obviously the N&O devoted a BUNCH of column inches to the story. Couple that with the NCSU ESPNU All Access piece last night and the Lupine Legend is beginning to rise out of the ashes. GO PACK! ................................ ................................................. .............................. BL: Legends and "guys named Dickie" NEVER really go away ........ .................................................

...Yes, we the Lupine breed occasionally listen to the UNC network to see how they are fairing against an opponent. Favorite WD story is listening to Jones and Eric’s open mic comments about WD and his “deficiencies” during their broadcast of the 2007 ACC Tourney. The championship game, BTW, had it not been for STATE playing the extra “play in” game, might have had a different outcome. ......... ................................................... ................................... BL: WD tended to take hisself JUST A TAD too seriously on occasion. He ain't the only Tru-Blue with that tendency. ......................................... ..................................................

I saw the article about Duke. I think students see college different than we did. There is so much entertainment around that fighting for the school just does not have the appeal it used to. I noticed the article touched on your idea that watching on TV or your computer is just as good as being there............................................. ................................................. ........... I like to consider myself a loyal Tru-Blue, and if asked what I think of the other ‘voices of’ I would have to honestly say: Who? I say that a bit in jest, but honestly I was in my 30’s before I knew duke had a ‘voice of’, and even then (subconsciously or not) would forget who it was! Also, until your column today, I didn’t know state had one either, much less who it is. It’s my blind love of the Carolina blue that keeps my mind from even considering that those other programs have any similarities of the great institution in Chapel Hill… ..... Bits of trivia that will probably never leave my brain now... is there a way to delete and write over?!?! ..................... .................................................. .................................................. ..... BL: Gary Hahn is "a really good guy" but State's legendary "Voices" are Bill Jackson, Wally Ausley and Ray Reeves. ........................... .................................................. .................

BL , Really enjoyed your " Voices of " article . Do you recall when UNC started their Tarheel Radio Network and who was the original"voice of" ? Jack Callahan and Bill Curry did UNC fb games in the 60's before WD , but I don't recall if they were the 1st!! Prior to that ... I remember listening to regular season games of all the Big Four teams , as well as the Dixie Classic and ACC tourney on the Tobacco Road Network . The primary play-by-play voice was Ray Reeves , who later became the voice of the Wolfpack . ................................... .............................................. .............................................. .... BL: Bill Currie is considered the first "Voice of" for UNC. He actually was only around 4-5 years before leaving for Pittsburgh. Woody replaced him in the late 60s.... Ray Reeves could say "William Neal Reynolds Coliseum" like no one else. ........ ............................................. .............. /

re MD court name, guess I'm in the minority. I'm a big "Lefty" fan (just as I was of Jimmy V), although I enjoyed watching Gary Williams, too. Somehow watching Williams versus Dean was never as interesting as watching Lefty and Dean coach. To me he was pretty much a victim of the Len Bias tragedy. ............... ............................................... ............. BL: Oh, I agree. The differences between Lefty and Gary do not justify giving GW the honor ....................................

I'll also stand up for the delightful (and delectable) Ms. Chenowith-well done and hire her for the Super Bowl now, please (to assure us Justin Bieber isn't going to be doing it, God forid!). Shame on Steve Tyler...if it wasn't so funny, he ought to be locked in a barn with two cows and Ryan Seacrest for a month. He sorta looked like Joan Rivers, didn't he?? You know, that one-to-many-facelifts look. Sad..... Eli is like a sad puppy, you gotta love him...mainly because he's not Peyton-he of the same ego and hubris as Koach K.
