It was a good one alright, even though the bad guys won. My heart was a'thumpin til the end. It was cool to see the intermingled fans. My boys and I went to 2 of the 3 games at "the Bosh" this season and sat with without nary a bad word directed my our way. Can't say the same for the umps though. .... Also, though all the players seem to be fine men and conducted themselves admirably, it's not all country boys who honed their games in the backyard. They were all all-stars whose parents could afford to tote them around the county every weekend. Unfortunately, the boys with just a dream and a hand-me-down glove scratchin up a game in the vacant lot next to the old tire store don't get to play big time college baseball. ............................................................................................. BL: Yeah they were all on SELECT teams at an early age and attended summer "academies" but at some point they played on a "sandlot" I betchs .................. ..................................

Cleaning my garage on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I came into get some water and happened to check my email. Great column on the game last night. Wife and I were there, sitting on the right-field lawn with hundreds of others (although considerably better dressed!) and just happy to be in the stadium. Moss was great, and Rodon was outstanding. Pack had their chances in regulation with two on bases on three occasions, but Heels defense rose to the occasion. I knew, with our shaky bullpen, we were in trouble if it went to extra innings. Proved to be true. .... But you are right, there may be hope for college sports after seeing that game. Sat with State and Carolina fans with everyone cheering for their team but no ill will. Long-time baseball fan, but haven't seen many this good. Made me recall a Pedro Martinez - Roger Clemens duel of 8 or 10 years ago. ..... I know you can see the action better on TV, but, last night, I was glad to be sitting in the grass on a beach towel for that one, win or lose. No Julius, no Butch, no tuition protestors, no board monkeys, just boys playin' ball, and playin' it well. ....................... .................................................. .................................................. ..... BL: NOTE: This very astute (and very State)fan is an esteemed member of the much-maligned UNC BOG and a darn good friend of BobLee's... His opinions are spot-on. ..... FWIW- he usually loves anything I write - :-) ........................... .................................................. .................

Went to the Wake Forest game. That GAME had about every unusual moment, except for a coach betting suspended or for a dugout clearing "discussion". More WP/PB's that Carter has pills (6 of them resulted in base advances and 2 RUNS). Never remember seing a runner hit a pop fly that was misjudged and hopped around and TWO runs scored....and the tag of the batter coming into third was the final out. Lot's of strategy. There will be folks that say if Mikey had been there, he would out "Foxed" Avent and scored early.....doubt it. Did NOT havd DSL at my campground, but kept up the scores on TV. Good column....met a guy in a MH next to ours that purports to know you. He is a UNC grad that used to write a feature column for the N&O and is now a Full Timer on the MH circuit. He retired from the N&O around 2006 if my memory serves me right. ......................... ..................................... BL: That sounds like Dennis Rogers - a good soul-type. ............. ..........................

Great game and a great writeup. Wife and sister were there as we drove back from Kennel's Beach. Great interactions with both red and blue fans who seemed to be just good baseball fans. Only negative was the outcome but well deserved by capitalizing on State's bullpen. Holly Springs neighbor Rodon was simply outstanding. He has a good family who has raised a good boy. The State relievers were mostly young with our closer Overman only in for two batters (both strikeots) but then out in hopes of pitching the next day (contrasted with Carolina's great closer who stayed in 3+ innings) In the disastrous 12th inning Avent was getting the whole bullpen a taste for the Regionals. In any case a great game on a beautiful night with a great crowd. Wish both teams well in the NCAA's. .... .................................................... ....................................... BL: All the "not good" baseball fans must be Dodger fans. It IS a different breed of humanity - one I LIKE a lot! .... ....................................................

\Didn't someone make a statement to the effect that "baseball will cure society's ills"? Maybe I'm just thinking wishfully. Great game last night, indeed. Baseball fans are a different breed. I wish I understood the Conference Tourney format. Maybe some folk can 'splain it to me. ............................................ ............................................ ........... BL: Swofford got the format from a Holy Man in Sumatra ..................... ............................................

What...no comments about the poor graduation rates of baseball players? Been waiting to hear your thoughts on that. .......... ................................. ................................. ....... BL: That is an issue across the country, not a UNC or UNC & NCSU issue. Left-handed dwarfs also have the same problem ................................. .............................

Hey, the Dodgers are back! Despite last Fall's heroics, the Cards are somewhat Pu-soul-less this year. We all come from different times and places. Go Dodgers! Go Pack! Go ACC! Go UNC System! Go Dems! GO GOD ! (And I know, one out of six ain't bad if you get the right one :>) ............ ............................................ ................ BL: Dodgers are fine. Pee Wee and Vin Scully ROCK! But Dodger fans were recently involved in ANOTHER fan mugging at Dodger Stadium ............................. ...........................................

Great ball. Really Great ball. However, there still is that troubling matter of " Parking your ballplayers. " Are you guys familiar with that phrase? Have you had the occasion to meet Scott Boras, BobLee? ............................. ............................................ ........... BL: Yes, familiar with the phrase and with Scott Boras but never met Boras .... ............................................
