May 14:   It’s a wonderful old analogy.  Little kid comes downstairs on Christmas morning to find a large steamin’ pile of “equine fecal matter” under the tree.... with a shovel laying beside it.  He eagerly grabs the shovel and starts digging thru the steamin’ pile o’ crap.  With the unfettered enthusiasm of the delightfully naïve he just knows that somewhere in that pile he will FIND A PONY.  After a lot of shoveling, maybe I’ve found a pony. .....

May 6:  I was looking forward to more columns like Hometowns.  I am tired of chronicling society’s septic seepage where “not all that bad” is considered “pretty good”.   I wanted more feel-good columns.... but nope.  The Swahili Slimeball – “Uncle Julius” Nyang’oro crawled out of his hidey-hole and shat upon what was left of The Carolina Way..... May 3:  Imagine Greenville NC with one of the world’s great rivers as its eastern boundary -  Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Forty-three years ago I sought refuge there by chance.  Last week we returned for a visit.   It was, once again, a delightful refuge from a world of increasing discord and uncertainty.  “Hometowns” can do that.
